Aikido
“The way of Peace and Harmony”
Aikido is a martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba (O Sensei). Aikido teaches the peaceful, non-violent resolution of conflict by combining various self-defense techniques based on the traditional Japanese sword, spear, daito-ryu aiki-jujitsu and other martial arts. From the first moment of practice, the emphasis is on the integration of mind, body and spirit. Since strength is not an essential element of Aikido, muscles and bodybuilding are not necessary. Consequently, it is an ideal martial art for men, women and children of all ages and physical abilities.
Aikido is performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. This requires very little physical energy, as the aikidoka (aikido practitioner) "leads" the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements. The techniques are completed with various throws or joint locks. Aikido can be categorized under the general umbrella of grappling arts.
The Aikido program at Asian Martial Arts is affiliated with Cleveland Aikikai which is directly linked to the world headquarters in Japan (Hombu Dojo). Cleveland Aikikai is a part of the national organization – Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU).
