TAI CHI

Tai Chi is often considered a martial art, but it is also an exercise art providing a multitude of health benefits for all ages.  The basic movements in a Tai Chi form, such as shifting the weight from one leg to another, stepping forward, backwards, and sideways, and moving the torso, head, eyes, and arms as a unit all have beneficial effects on the human body. Clinical research has shown that daily practice can positively affect blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It improves mood, balance and flexibility, and strengthens bone and muscles. The design of the movements in a Tai Chi form draws awareness into the body and helps improve mental focus. A student of Tai Chi will feel relaxed and energized after each class.

Tai Chi is a low impact form of exercise with a meditative component.

The following forms are available at Asian Martial Arts Inc, of Medina:

Wu Style Form -- Thursday evenings, 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm.

24 Short Form  -- Tuesday Afternoons, 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

The Wu Style is a form consisting of about 108 movements. It is a beautiful form that takes approximately 15-20 minutes to do. Any of the movements can be adjusted to ones current physical capabilities.

In addition to the Tai Chi form, students will learn gentle, standing Qigong warm-up exercises that safely loosen all joints in the body.

Please note that no street shoes are permitted inside the Dojo. Students can be barefoot, wear socks, Tai Chi shoes, or some other fabric-soled shoe on the mats.

Instructor: Sifu Mary Cuchna
Mary Cuchna began studying Tai Chi Chuan in January 1995 with Sifu Richard Leirer, Director of the Qigong Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. She became certified by the Academy in the Simplified 24 Short Form and the classic Wu Style in 1998. She immediately began teaching at the Wadsworth Center for Older Adults. In addition to classes taught at Asian Martial Arts,  Sifu Mary Cuchna teaches at various locations in and around Medina County. She has also studied Tai Chi Sword, Sun Style Tai Chi, and Tai Chi Single Fan forms.

F.A.Q.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN TAI CHI?

Anyone is welcome to learn Tai Chi! It is an exceptional health maintenance program for any age, and is practiced by people well into their 80s and 90s; however, most children younger than 15 find it too slow.  It is the best exercise for middle-aged and older adults because it is non-contact and there are no jarring movements that damage the joints.

DO YOU NEED TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT?

No. If you can walk, you can do Tai Chi. One of the wonderful things about Tai Chi as an exercise program for health is that any of the slow, gentle movements can be adjusted to suit one’s physical capability. If begun at a relatively early age and practiced on a regular basis, Tai Chi will help to maintain one’s balance, keep one flexible, increase mental focus, and integrate body, mind, and spirit bringing a sense of overall well-being to the student. It is also an effective form of exercise for those recovering from surgery or injury -- it is always advisable to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO PURCHASE TO PARTICIPATE?

No special clothing or equipment is required to learn Tai Chi. At Asian Martial Arts you only need to bring a pair of clean-soled shoes to wear during class, or plan on wearing socks. At some point, if a student wishes to wear a Tai Chi uniform, that is quite acceptable but is up to the student.

HOW OFTEN ARE THE CLASSES HELD?

Currently, Short Form Tai Chi class is held once a week, on Tuesdays, 2:00 – 3:00 pm. The Wu Style Tai Chi class is held once a week on Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:15 pm.  Both classes run in 8-week sessions, meeting once each week for 8 weeks.

WHAT IS THE COST FOR ATTENDING WU STYLE OR SHORT FORM TAI CHI CLASSES?

The class fee is $50 per 8 week session of either the Short Form or the Wu Style class, payable at the first class. There are no refunds for missed classes.
