Qigong
Qigong is the art and science of using breathing techniques, gentle movement, and meditation to cleanse, strengthen, and circulate the life energy (qi). Qigong practice leads to better health and vitality and a tranquil state of mind. Qigong is also helpful in preventing the dispersion of energy and facilitates contact with the 'Natural Energy,' making the energy within the body circulate and thus increasing resistance against illness.
Qigong consists of techniques for dealing with human energy flow. In applying these techniques, one employs the use of the human body's chakras and meridians which are the body's focal points and channels through which it's Qi Energy flows. In the view of Chinese medicine, many illnesses are caused by blockages in these channels. In learning to recognize, utilize, circulate, and direct the internal energy of the human body, an individual can also connect with the energy of the universe and of the earth, and learn to interact with all of nature as a whole. Through use of certain energies and techniques, Qigong can relieve pain, strengthen the body's constitution, improve intelligence, strengthen the body’s immune system and prolong life.
It's widely accepted that exercise can promote health and prevent illnesses. Western exercise, however, concentrates on muscular/skeletal development through the application of stress and load to build up strength. In other words, it works from the outside inward. Qigong, on the other hand, works the body from the inside, outwards. It connects the body and spirit, focusing on breathing, concentration, and physical movements.
There are six different kinds of Qi “Chi”
which exist in our bodies:
Gu Chi (grain Chi) - generates our body's energy.
Kong Chi (air in lung) - enkindles our energy.
Zan Chi (between all organs) - our body's original energy.
Wei Chi (guarding energy) - occupies the surface of our skin.
Xie Chi (blood chi) - maintains our bodies temperature.
Jin Chi (sperms or eggs producing chi) - reproductive energy.
Martial artists mainly train in Zan Chi and Xie Chi. Yet, the other four kinds of Chi will still receive benefit when we practice the martial art Qigong.
As a spiritual discipline, Qigong leads to self-awareness, tranquility, and harmony with nature.
Because Qigong includes both dynamic and gentle techniques that can be practiced from standing, seated, or supine postures, it is suitable for young and old. Practices can be tailored to individual needs making it an ideal aid to recovery from illness or injury. Qigong is a form of complementary medicine. It works well with other forms of therapy and should never be used as a substitute for necessary treatment by a physician.
