Who We Are

We are a traditional group of schools located throughout the United States.

The Seibukan Dojo (Holy Art School), of the Sukunaihayshi "Shorin-Ryu" style of karate, was established in 1962 by the late, great Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro of Chatan-Cho, Okinawa. He received his training under the watchful eye of the famed Sensei Chotoku Kyan of Shuri, Okinawa. It is on this training that Sensei Shimabukuro based the establishment of the Seibukan Dojo.

Since its beginning, the Seibukan Dojo (schools) have continued the legacy of the past great Sensei by teaching the same techniques and philosophies that were handed down to our present day Sensei. This legacy is one of the components that makes our Dojo unique from others, for there are few schools that have remained unchanged in today's world of commercialized Karate.

Our Sensei (instructors) are proud to continue the teachings of Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro as he intended them to be.

Edward M. Takae
Supreme Sensei
Tampa, Florida

Our Style
Our style of karate, Okinawan Sukunaihayshi "Shorin-Ryu", was handed down from the great Sensei Chotoku Kyan (1869-1945) of Okinawa. Sensei Kyan trained under many Sensei and founded the Sukunaihayshi style of karate.

The Seibukan Dojo was founded by Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro (1908-1969) who was a direct student of Sensei Kyan. Sensei Shimabukuro studied only under Sensei Kyan and studied only Sukunaihayshi.

Sensei Edward Takae trained and studied only under Sensei Shimabukuro and is the most senior of his students in the USA. Sensei Takae is the recipient of the only "Shihan Menjo" (Masters License) known to have been given by Sensei Zenryo Shimabukuro.

Today, under Sensei Takae's guidance, we continue the unchanged, traditional teachings of Sukunaihayshi "Shorin-Ryu" karate with Seibukan Dojo throughout the United States.
